July 13, 2023Fall Flowers and Why It’s the Best Time to Plant Perennials
August 11, 2023If you’re just now starting your gardening journey, then you likely have lots of questions. Many new gardeners are often confused about why their plants die. According to GardeningEct, 43% of urban gardeners have plants die as compared to only 30% of rural gardeners. There are lots of details and terms that go into successful planting that you might not be familiar with, such as full shade and part shade. This quick guide will help you better understand the differences and what they can mean to your flowers and garden plants.
Why Sun Exposure Matters
You might think that plants get the sun they need just because they are outside, but there is really a lot more to it than that. Different types of plants need different amounts of sun exposure in order to reach ideal conditions. If ideal conditions aren’t met, then the plant will not grow as well or produce blooms or fruit. This is why it’s important to understand the different terms used to refer to sun exposure. This can help you choose flowers and plants that will do best in your yard and help you find out how much exposure your yard gets during the day.
Partial Shade
Partial shade, also referred to as partial sun, indicates that a plant would need about four to six hours of sun exposure each day. It’s often preferred that this light exposure comes in the cooler morning hours for garden plants. Most plants that are described as needing partial shade, will not do as well in harsh evening sun. Even if it’s the right amount, the evening rays are far more intense than the light in the morning.
Full Shade
You might think that full shade means no sunlight at all, but that’s not the case because all plants need sun exposure to thrive. Full shade actually means four hours or less of sunlight, preferably in the cooler morning hours. Full shade can also mean a full day of dappled sunlight. This refers to daylight that is being filtered through something else, such as a larger plant, a trellis, a pergola, or something that would shield the plant.
