If you have a small garden space, you may think you are limited in what you can grow. Vertical planting ideas can open up possibilities for your garden space. This type of planting uses a smaller ‘footprint’ in the soil. These planting ideas and tips can help you make the most out of your garden space.

1. Start With the Structure

Before you plant anything, be sure you have the structure the plants will grow on in place. You want to put the structure up first to ensure you do not damage the roots of pre-planted plants. Choose a structure that is well-anchored and strong.

Growing plants up instead of horizontally is an excellent way to make the most out of your space. You can yield up to 10 times more produce with a vertical garden.

2. Choose Your Plants

All plants can technically grow in a vertical garden for at least a short period. However, some plants do better than others. Plants with shallow root systems do best. Some planting ideas for your vertical garden include adding herbs like basil, parsley, lemon balm, oregano, chives, mint, and even rosemary to the display.

Other planting ideas include peas, green beans, cucumbers, pumpkins, squash, eggplant, and tomato. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, tomatoes are home gardens’ most commonly grown vegetables, so consider tomatoes as your garden staple.

3. Maintain Your Vertical Garden

Maintenance is pretty straightforward once your garden starts. You will need to water plants regularly, fertilize when necessary, and trim back plants as needed. Some plants will need a little help to grow where you want them to.

Keep plenty of tie material on hand. You can use zip ties (tied loosely), twist ties, or small pieces of twine to help plants grow in the direction you want them to. Vine plants like cucumbers will naturally grow up, but other plants will not unless you encourage upward growth.

As with any planting, you want to make sure you use good soil that is rich in nutrients. If you don’t have the space you want to grow, then vertical planting and these planting tips will help you create the space. The beauty of vertical gardening is that it can be accomplished in very small spaces. Start your vertical garden today by ordering plants from our big selection.
