When Is the Best Time to Plant and Care for Fall Perennials?
September 22, 2020

About eight out of ten American households participate in different types of gardening activities, and one of the most favorite flowers of fall is the garden mum. Garden mums are a classic fall flower whose bright and brilliant colors make it garden favorite during the autumn months. Of course, if you want your mums to last through the fall, they do require some TLC.

Whether you’re looking to plant your mums outside or you want to keep them indoors, here’s what you need to know about how to take care of your mums.

Outdoor mum care

When you’re planting your mums in your garden, you want to be sure to choose a space where they’ll have plenty of sunlight available. Your mums will need well-draining soil to produce healthy blossoms, too. Schwartz Greenhouse has the garden supplies you need if you don’t have well-draining soil on hand.

Keep your garden mums approximately 18 inches away from other plants and water beneath their foliage at soil-level. You’ll want to water your mums frequently throughout the first week they’re planted. After the first week, one inch of water a week will do just fine.

Make sure to remove any dead leaves, stems, or wilted blooms. Mulch can help to keep your mums in bloom for longer, too, as the weather gets colder. Add about three to four inches of mulch around the base of your mums.

Indoor mum care

Just like outdoor mums, it’s important to keep your indoor mums in a sunny area of the house. You’ll also want to replant your mums into a larger gardening pot to give them lots of room to root and grow. Use a quality potting soil mix to give your mums plenty of nutrients. If you don’t have potting soil mix on hand, Schwartz Greenhouse has online garden supplies that can help.

Put a layer of potting soil at the bottom of the new pot before re-potting your mums. Be sure to keep the soil moist and to remove any dead or wilting flowers to help your mums last as long as possible.
